Stay on Teide – Parador de Las Cañadas del Teide

If you want to experience a special night at the foot of the volcano — easily accessible by car or bus — the Parador is the perfect choice.

What is a Parador?

A Parador is a historic hotel owned by the Spanish state, located in unique settings. And here it’s extra special: right in the national park, at 2,000 meters altitude, you sleep among lava fields, craters, and rock formations.

The hotel has two restaurants and free parking for guests. Perfect for an evening of stargazing; you can step into nature directly from your room.

Teide has something special

The shadow of El Teide at sunrise – a magical moment from the summit.
Crater and shadow of El Teide at sunrise

Even if you have visited Tenerife many times, a visit to El Teide remains something special. I have lived on the island for over thirty years, and yet the volcano still holds the same fascination for me.

Like a silent guardian, you can see it rising above the island almost everywhere — perhaps that’s why the locals affectionately call it Padre Teide.

I was lucky enough to climb to the summit three times (*). Freezing cold, but unforgettable. The most impressive sight was the enormous shadow of the mountain stretching over the clouds at sunrise. Magical!

(*) The Refugio de Altavista (the highest overnight spot on the mountain) is currently closed. If you want to hike to the summit yourself, first check which permits you need and when it is allowed. More information about permits and rules in the national park can be found here ⭢ Tenerife ON FAQ

Good to know

– A Titsa bus runs to the park daily, but the schedule is limited and reservations are not possible.
– With a rental car, you have a lot of freedom, but parking in the park can be difficult on busy days.
– An organized tour is the most relaxed way to explore Teide: you don’t have to worry about driving, and a guide provides interesting explanations along the way.
