Wintering with a pet on Tenerife

Perhaps you've been considering spending the winter in Tenerife but aren't sure what to do with your beloved pet? If you have a comfortable place where you can leave your pet, it might make it somewhat easier to escape the harsh winter weather for 2 to 3 months. But do you really want to be separated from your best buddy for that long? So, here's a blog about the possible options for bringing a pet to Tenerife.

Flying with a pet

With most airlines, the maximum weight for a pet, including the travel bag, is 20 pounds. But then Fluffy can simply come along in the cabin. Large animals are only allowed in the luggage hold.

A handy overview of available airlines, including price orientation, can be found in this link from Skyscanner.

Transport with pet on the island

How do you get from the airport to your accommodation? You could rent a car or take an (expensive) taxi, but since June this year there is an alternative: the bus!

For more detailed information, read my page about Public Transport. In a nutshell:

  • Pets weighing less than 22 pounds are allowed in a travel bag
  • Pets weighing more than 22 pounds (and this weight class specifically concerns dogs) must be kept on a leash, with a leash of less than 19 inches

Pet-friendly accommodations

There are plenty of properties in Tenerife that welcome pets. From cozy hotels to charming holiday homes, there is something for everyone. Here is a small selection of beautifully located accommodations that are not only great for you and your pet, but are also affordable.

Hotel Rural Casablanca

Do you enjoy hiking in nature and want to get away from all the hustle and bustle? Then Hotel Rural Casalanca is definitely recommended: located in Icod el Alto, just 14 kilometers from Puerto de la Cruz, the accommodation consists of renovated 18th-century Canarian houses. With a beautiful view of Mount Teide and the ocean, you can completely relax here. Several hiking trails surround the property. South

Las Terrazas II

On holiday, you probably also want to go to the beach. Then you've come to the right place in Las Terrazas II! A 1 mile walk from this beautiful holiday home takes you directly to Playa del Horno. On many beaches, dogs are not allowed in Tenerife, but they are officially allowed on this beach. On the nearby Playa de la Tejita no one will bother you if you bring your dog. This gives you some options for romping in the surf with your dog. The cozy surfing village of El Médano is 2.1 miles away, a real insider tip for spending the winter. Don't have a pet yet? Consider adoption!

You may not have a pet yet, but would like one? Then adoption might be a nice alternative. Tenerife has several shelters that allow adoptions. In this link there's an overview of the shelters on the island, so you can take a look. At some of these shelters you can volunteer to walk the dogs, and who knows, you might bring home more than just memories!
