TENERIFE INSIDER TIPS

APARTHOTELS TENERIFE

Freedom and convenience within easy reach

Aparthotels Tenerife: holiday on your terms

You want the convenience of a holiday complex, but without the daily bustle of hotel buffets. Aparthotels offer the perfect middle ground: combining hotel services — such as reception and housekeeping — with the privacy and freedom of an apartment. What’s more, you stay in an environment specifically designed for tourists (*).

Aparthotels come equipped with a kitchen or kitchenette, allowing you to enjoy breakfast at your own pace or prepare a meal whenever you like. At the same time, you have the freedom to spontaneously dine out at one of the island’s many great restaurants, without being tied to fixed buffet times.

On this page, you’ll find a selection of the best aparthotels Tenerife has to offer.

Costa Adeje is more touristy, with supermarkets mainly aimed at visitors and often a bit pricier, but there are still plenty of great dining options, especially around the promenade at Playa Fañabe.

Aparthotel vs. Holiday Home

If you’re travelling independently, you may have considered booking a holiday home. It can be a nice alternative, but there are some catches — for example, illegal rentals. A stay can be cancelled unexpectedly, and if problems arise, there is often no one to turn to. Always check that the property has a valid VV number and a NRA registration — without these official documents, a holiday home is not legally allowed to be rented.

Housing shortage

Even if you’ve found a private property that meets all the official requirements, choosing a holiday home in a residential complex is a moral consideration. The housing market in Tenerife has been under pressure for some time, and the rapid growth of holiday rentals in residential areas is a significant contributing factor.

The effects are particularly felt by workers in the tourism sector. Affordable housing close to work is often hard to find, forcing them to live farther away and spend hours in traffic each day. Since tourism often runs late into the evening, some workers sleep in their cars during the week and only return home on weekends.

Others are forced to seek refuge in so-called chabolas (self-built huts), old caravans, or rusting campers — usually without electricity or running water. Near tourist areas, complete chabola neighborhoods have even emerged, such as between Playa Paraíso and El Puertito. With an average net salary of around €1,200 per month, renting is simply out of reach for them.

Shacks on the coast of Tenerife with an old camper van and La Gomera in the background

For the small number of residents who still have a roof over their heads in the busy coastal areas, the quality of life is greatly affected by all these holiday homes. After a long day at work, they are not keen on suitcases thundering through the complex or on holidaymakers partying loudly into the night. It’s understandable that this often leads to conflicts. For this reason, it’s best to choose accommodation that is specifically intended for tourists, such as an aparthotel, or a holiday home outside residential areas.
